American technology company NVIDIA known for its graphic cards and mobile processors has finally announced successor of Tegra 3 with the next generation of their mobile processor the NVIDIA Tegra 4 SoC codename ‘Wayne’ at Consumer Electronic Show 2013 at Las Vegas, Nevada.
It is claimed to be the world’s fastest mobile processor. It’s 28nm HPL (28nm low power with high-k + metal gates) with max 1.9GHz frequency. Tegra 4 uses four ARM Cortex-A15 cores, that include a second generation battery saver core same like predecessor Tegra 3 of 2012. The output of CPU & GPU claims to be 2.6x and 6 times respectively of the predecessor. Yea! right 6 times graphic improvement of Tegra 3 thanks to its 72 custom GPU cores with CUDA and PhysX technology that helps to run and play apps and games in lightening speed with best quality of graphics. Not impressed? It is also capable to play 4K (4 times resolution of 1080) videos like a charm, that is spectacular.
Previous Tegra 3 was not able to find that much success in its way into as many devices as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 not for lack of power, but because of poor battery life. NVIDIA says that it consumes up to 45 percent less power than Tegra 3 and provides up to 14 hours of HD video playback on phones. Despite its companion core setup, Nvidia couldn’t manage to integrate LTE in its chip, which negatively impacted battery life when compared to Qualcomm’s integrated setup in dual-core Snapdragon S4. Unfortunately, the same story again The Tegra 4 doesn’t have an LTE chip integrated but it support for an optional 4G LTE modem in the form of NVIDIA’s new Icera i500 chipset. So this means smartphones and tablets with Tegra 4 inside will require an additional cellular modem. Although the latest quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro smartphones don’t have LTE integrated either. Qualcomm is expected to release a chip that does this Spring, while Nvidia is unlikely to manage that until later this year.
For all photography enthusiast who love to take shots from smartphone and new hipsters with their tablets. It’s a legendary new for you. Although Tegra 4 is claim to be fastest for gaming, graphical and uber performance. It comes with technology called “Computational Photography Architecture” that significantly reduces the time for camera related functions such as HDR (High Dynamic Range Imaging), which requires taking two images one with bright other with dark at exactly the same time. Tegra 4 works to reduce the time duration between these shots resulting in better clearer pictures of moving objects. Practically speeds up the process of taking HDR photos by 10 time over Apple iPhone 5. Woop!!
Though Xbox 360 uses nvidia chips in their consoles, for the first time NVIDIA launches their first own gaming console initially called “Project Shield” a handheld console that will be powered by Tegra 4. There’s no clue for the pricing or release date for either Project Shield and other Tegra 4 devices but you can expect to hear about some more devices over the coming days of 2013.
